In sooo many threads we hear about the "stereotypical" gay man and how the poster isn't like that and/or isn't attracted to that.
I'm still not entirely clear on what's being denounced though... I a knew a guy IRL who claimed to hate stereotypical gays because "they're ruining it for the rest of us" but end up chasing guys who (IMO) are pretty damn gay: flappy hand gestures, "gay voice", sashaying around in tight fitting clothes...
Well I figured out that what he actually wanted was big muscly guys and I guess the corollary of that was that, for him, despite his supposed distaste for effeminacy or "stereotypical behaviour" he'd put up with any amount of it for a pair of strong thighs.
You probably won't be surprised to find out this guy was probably the thinnest person I ever met. Proper, anorexia thin.*
But what's pretty clear is that, for him the thinner you are the more effeminate and stereotypical you are, to the exclusion of anything else. Let's not even get started on how being a built gym-addict is a pretty "gay stereotype", as well
I was just thinking about this and the before-noted tendency of gays here and everywhere to declaim "the stereotype" and I was wondering if everyone has quite a specific idea of what they mean they use that term. I've always assumed that statement referred to quite a broad range of behaviours but it might be we're all using it to refer to one or two specific characteristics and so we're all saying different things when we talk about "stereotypical" gay men.
So yeah - when you talk about stereotypical gay men, what are you actually, specifically talking about?
